Supporting Your Team: The Supervisor's Mental Health Toolkit

11 May 2026   Industry Standards

In the construction industry, we often focus on physical safety equipment like hard hats and high-visibility vests. However, the Building Mental Health Alliance (BMHA) is reminding us that the health of the mind is just as critical as the health of the body.

The BMHA has released a comprehensive Supervisor’s Mental Health Toolkit, a vital resource designed to help supervisors navigate the complexities of workplace wellbeing.

Why Mental Health Matters for Supervisors
As a supervisor, you are on the front lines of your team's wellbeing. The toolkit highlights several key reasons why mental health must be a priority:
Early Intervention: It is much easier to support someone at an early stage than to wait until they reach a crisis point.
Productivity and Loyalty: Employees with high levels of wellbeing are more productive and loyal to their teams.
Preventing Absence: Mental health problems are the leading cause of long-term sickness absence.

What’s Inside the Toolkit?
The toolkit offers practical advice for supervisors to integrate mental health awareness into their daily routines:

1. Spotting the Early Signs
Everyone’s experience is different, but the toolkit lists common indicators that a colleague might be struggling, such as:
Poor concentration or being easily distracted.
Irritability, short temper, or uncharacteristic aggression.
Withdrawal from social activities or appearing overwhelmed.

2. Starting the Conversation
Opening a dialogue can feel daunting, but the toolkit provides simple, open-ended phrases to help, such as: "I’ve noticed you’ve been a bit down lately. Is everything OK?". It emphasizes listening without judgment, allowing for silences, and avoiding the urge to "fix" everything immediately.

3. The 10 Keys to Happier Living
The guide also focuses on the supervisor's own mental health, sharing "10 Keys to Happier Living" based on research from Action for Happiness. These include:
Relating: Strengthening connections with those around you.
Awareness: Taking time to switch off "autopilot" and be in the moment.
Resilience: Finding healthy outlets for stress and choosing how to respond to challenges.

What is the Building Mental Health Alliance?
The Building Mental Health Alliance is an initiative dedicated to improving mental health standards across the industry. Recognizing that work can significantly impact mental health—either by contributing to stress or by providing a vital sense of purpose—the Alliance provides tools and signposting to support services to ensure no worker has to struggle alone.
